Left to Right: Rhoads, Faust, and Alexander
signing at Dark Delicacies in Los Angeles.
There is a thriving underground in hardcore literary erotic horror, where
devotees of the dark arts find sustenance in the wicked words of some serious
badass wordslingers. You might not know it to watch the frat-a-licious antics
of torture porn flicks or the boobtastic adventures of bottle-blonde bimbos
from Chatsworth, but the head-on collision between Eros and Thanatos is
alive and well in short story form -- and many of its most dangerous practitioners
are women. If you've ever been told that dames are into the hearts-and-flowers,
caress-my-inner-Goddess brand of eroticism, crack a copy of Sins of the
Sirens and take a taste of .44-caliber love and stiletto desire.
Sins of the Sirens is the third release from John Everson's Dark
Arts Books, a small press specializing in horror. Featuring the talents
of Morbid Curiosity publisher Loren Rhoads, Mehitobel Wilson, and Money
Shot author Christa Faust as well as Eros Zine contributor Maria Alexander,
it's an unhealthy dose of fourteen dangerous tales of dark desire. Featuring
both reprints and originals, it collects three to four of the best horror
stories from each of these members of the horror-noir-goth underground,
each one laced with liberal doses of eroticism and a sucker-punch of wicked
imagination.
Alexander and Rhoads will be making a public appearance to promote the
book at San Francisco's Mission District nerdcore fueling station, Borderlands
Books, quite possibly the coolest fantastical bookstore this side of Miss
Beckwitham's Spooktacular Spellbooks down on West 14th by the river of
molten souls. Alexander, in particular, is a rare bird in these parts,
in from France for a limited visit, so if you're a fan of her delectable
horror stories, this'll be a great chance to hear her read.
